Pacific Salmon Slam Community Code of Conduct

Pacific Salmon Slam reserves the right to update or modify this Code of Conduct as the program evolves.

Our Commitment to Community

The Pacific Salmon Slam was created to celebrate British Columbia’s recreational anglers and support the conservation of wild Pacific salmon.

Our community is built around shared values:

  • Respect;
  • Stewardship;
  • Integrity;
  • Conservation;
  • Education;
  • Responsible recreation.

Every participant has a role in representing these values.

Whether you are a lifelong angler, someone discovering salmon fishing for the first time, or a conservation supporter cheering from the shoreline, you are part of a community committed to protecting the future of wild Pacific salmon.

Respect for Wild Pacific Salmon

Wild Pacific salmon are among British Columbia’s most iconic species and are an important part of our natural and cultural heritage.

Participants are expected to:

  • Treat fish with respect;
  • Follow responsible handling practices;
  • Follow all fishing regulations;
  • Support sustainable fishing practices;
  • Consider the conservation status of salmon populations;
  • Recognize the importance of protecting salmon habitat.

The Pacific Salmon Slam celebrates fishing while recognizing the responsibility anglers have as stewards of the resource.

Ethical Angling

Participants agree to uphold the highest standards of ethical angling.

This includes:

  • Following all applicable regulations;
  • Using lawful fishing methods;
  • Respecting catch limits;
  • Respecting closures and conservation measures;
  • Avoiding unnecessary harm to fish;
  • Practicing responsible behaviour on the water.

The integrity of the Pacific Salmon Slam depends on every participant doing their part.

Honesty and Fair Participation

The Pacific Salmon Slam operates on trust.

Participants must:

  • Submit accurate catch information;
  • Submit their own experiences;
  • Provide truthful photographs and descriptions;
  • Respect verification processes.

Attempting to misrepresent catches, submit inaccurate information, or manipulate the challenge undermines the purpose of the program and the broader angling community.

Respect for Other Anglers

British Columbia’s waters belong to all who enjoy them.

Participants are expected to treat other anglers, guides, boaters, volunteers, and community members with respect.

This includes:

  • Sharing waterways responsibly;
  • Respecting fishing space;
  • Avoiding unnecessary conflict;
  • Supporting new anglers;
  • Encouraging positive participation.

The Pacific Salmon Slam welcomes anglers of all backgrounds and experience levels.

Respect for Public Lands and Waters

Participants are ambassadors for the outdoors.

Participants should:

  • Respect public access areas;
  • Leave fishing locations cleaner than they found them;
  • Avoid damaging habitat;
  • Dispose of waste responsibly;
  • Respect private property;
  • Support conservation efforts.

Small actions by individual anglers can have a significant impact on the health of our watersheds.

Respectful Online Participation

The Pacific Salmon Slam community extends beyond the water.

Participants are expected to communicate respectfully through:

  • Website discussions;
  • Social media;
  • Community groups;
  • Digital submissions;
  • Other program-related platforms.

The following behaviours are not acceptable:

  • Harassment;
  • Threats;
  • Discrimination;
  • Personal attacks;
  • Deliberately misleading information;
  • Promotion of illegal activities;
  • Content that encourages harm to fish, wildlife, or habitat.

Indigenous Communities and Traditional Territories

Pacific Salmon Slam recognizes that salmon have deep ecological, cultural, and historical importance throughout British Columbia.

Participants are encouraged to learn about and respect:

  • Indigenous relationships with salmon;
  • Traditional knowledge;
  • Indigenous-led conservation initiatives;
  • The importance of collaboration in salmon stewardship.

Respectful relationships and shared stewardship are essential to the future of wild Pacific salmon.

Conservation First

The Pacific Salmon Slam exists because healthy salmon populations require active stewardship.

Participants are encouraged to:

  • Learn about salmon conservation;
  • Support habitat protection;
  • Participate in restoration activities;
  • Share knowledge;
  • Encourage responsible recreation.

Every participant contributes to a larger effort to protect wild Pacific salmon for future generations.

Reporting Concerns

If you observe behaviour that appears inconsistent with this Code of Conduct, you may contact Pacific Salmon Slam.

Reports should include:

  • Description of the concern;
  • Relevant dates or information;
  • Supporting documentation where appropriate.

Pacific Salmon Slam will review concerns fairly and take appropriate action.

Enforcement

Pacific Salmon Slam reserves the right to:

  • Remove inappropriate content;
  • Reject submissions;
  • Suspend accounts;
  • Remove participants from the program;
  • Take other appropriate action.

Actions will be guided by the seriousness of the concern and the need to protect the integrity of the program and community.
